Jack Spratley

This fly is not a dry at all but I would never go fishing with my box of dries without this fly.  When the Steelhead refuses to eat a well presented dry one must sometime resort to a wet fly.  This is the one.  This variation of the "Doc Spratley" is tied entirely of pheasant tail with a black collar so it is just a big Pheasant Tail Nymph.  No trout can resist!  This fly in size 3 is the big producer on the Thompson for brutes up to 25 pounds.  Put a handful of these in your dry fly box!

Purple Peril

This is the original purple Steelhead fly.  Ken Macleod did it again and helped us all take our fishing up a notch.  Walt Johnson fished very few other flies on the Stilly.  He even fashioned a Grease Liner style Peril for dry fly fishing.  Tied with a dubbed body and thin wing, low water style.

Voodoo Child

No trout can resist Peacock to the fly, or so Colonel Carey said truthfully so many years ago.  This is my variation of the Spade.  Tied with a Peacock Herl body covered with an oversized purple Guinea hackle on a gold  hook.  Use this one in full sun with full confidence.

Willy Gunn

This is by far the most popular Salmon fly in the British Isles.  Developed a long time ago in Ireland it is also dynamite for Steelhead.

In low water or in high pressure grease line this one on a Steelhead Iron to get it a foot or so below the surface.  The size 9 is deadly using this technique!
